About the Poor Servants of the Mother of God (SMG)

Our congregation, the Poor Servants of the Mother of God (SMG), was founded in 1872 by Mother Magdalen Taylor. Her influence and inspiration continue in all works carried out by the Sisters, associates, and staff throughout the world, helping us rise to the challenges and opportunities of today.

The Poor Servants of the Mother of God has been providing services in the Triad area for more than 60 years. We began operating Maryfield Nursing Home for just 22 residents. It has since grown to accommodate 125 residents and has evolved into one of the area’s most respected care communities. Dedicated to the spirit of graceful living, our mission is to demonstrate God’s love for the lives we touch. Today, we continue the dream with Pennybyrn at Maryfield, a full-service retirement community being enjoyed by active retirees of all faiths.
